Welcome to my first project gun. This is my
primary weapon, the gun that I take to battle, the gun I eat with, sleep
with, kiss goodnight, etc...
Note to readers. This is not a
review of my upgraded Aug, but I will insert notes regarding the changes
certain upgrades made as appropriate. Here is the current status of the
AUG in the pictures.
Systema m120, System Metal Bushings, Systema
Standard Ratio Flat Gears, Custom 9.6v 1500maH
battery, 4x40 scope, First Factory Phantom Kit,
Modified Trigger assembly.
Realism
Seeing as how I have never held
or shot a real steel Steyr, I cannot vouch for the realism
of this weapon. However, I have seen the real steel in pictures, and
documentaries, and this appears to be quite accurate
to the real thing. I do know however, that without the Phantom kit, the
dimensions are extremely close to the real one.
Functionality
The Steyr, with an 8.4v mini,
suffers from 2-3 major problems that I will address later on, for now lets
focus on the positive aspects. The gun is very functional, and very heavy.
The bullpup design allows for quick shouldering, and effective shooting
from the hip. The mag release works quite well, and I have yet to see or
be hit by the infamous AUG Magazine catch problem.
Effectiveness On the Field
Well, lets stat by saying that I had 29 confirmed kills
from considerable distance at OSC:II. This does not include close range
kills, or in-range kills. Basically, this gun has very good range, and
very good accuracy due to the fact that the barrel is one of the longest
of any gun made. The gun is second only to the PSG-1. The gun does suffer
however from 8.4v linked to a EG700, resulting in a disappointing rate of
fire. (I solved this problem with the 9.6v battery) You can install Speed
Gears, or get a higher voltage battery, but don't get me wrong, the rate
of fire is not to be laughed at, it just leaves a bit to be desired after
shooting a p90 for a while. Now, with the upgraded version, my Steyr fires
faster than MoLE's M16A2 with a 1000. Even stock, the range and accuracy
on this gun was notable, even more so now. This gun puts up a 2"
spread at about 70 feet with .25's.
Problems
As much as I love my gun, it does
have some notable problems. First of, as many of you may have heard is the
problem with the semi-auto fire. The trigger is hard to get used to, and
the semi is very unreliable. For those of you who don't know, the
Steyr has a responsive two-stage trigger, which means that half a pull
gets you semi, a full pull gets you full auto (like the p90).
Now, there are a
few ways to fix the trigger problem if it bothers you, and I will review
them in the tech\upgrades section soon. The 9.6v does help a bit with the
semi problem.
The other is that the hop up
seems to adjust itself after moving the gun a lot. I have to constantly
readjust my hop up after running a long way, jumping down from something,
etc. This may just be my gun, but I doubt it.
The other is battery capacity. With stock batteries, you
are extremely limited in what you can do. You need to carry multiple
batteries with this airsoft.
IMO Opinions
After using the Steyr for about 2
months, I have deemed it a battle worthy useful investment. I will review
the Phantom kit soon, but if I were to do this again, I would buy
everything I bought this time all over. This is a sweet Assault Rifle, I
would recommend it to anyone in th market for a possible tactical sniper
rifle.
